RE: SVN?
Moo Wrote:GUYS GUYS! SVN STANDS FOR SUBVERSION, as in the pre-release of the next VERSION of something. It's used by developers and hopefully soon by mappers, to communicate between eachother and edit software.

Well not really.. Subversion is a version-control software. Meaning someone starts a repository (a collection) and then add files to it. If one changes a file they 'commit' it and after a while svn will hold all the different version.
First of all you now have a sort of history, can view differences or merge changes.. and also if several people work on the project the others can regulary 'update' from the repository and thus everyone will stay uptodate and have the same set of files. Also with viewing diffs you can see what others have changed, can find out who fixed or broke something.

So it does not really have something todo with communication or certain versions.. Communication needs to be done seperatly and normally 'versions of some software' are only released if the devs (or in this case here, the mapper) think what is currently in svn is good and stable enough.. then this collection gets packed up and is released as a new version..

For a short explaination..

RE: SVN?
It'll work, it just has to be connected to the same repositories. I'll ask -z- give you those when you earn/need them. :)

RE: SVN?
No, SVN is a professional development tool that runs on a server. It takes a serious understanding to use it properly. It can be very obscure until you completely understand what's going on and this can cause issues for other users trying to use the SVN. Your changes directly affect the community of developers you are working with.

For this reason and many others I'll leave you to figure out, I will not just hand over access to the SVN.

RE: SVN?
What DJ means is that he checked out the current development state of Nexuiz from its svn repository and can't start a nexuiz server of what he got there. Though i have no idea why :)
I think this thread causes more confusion then solves so far :)

RE: SVN?
This isn't what I had in mind for this thread actually. I was hoping it would help Moo guide the alleged collaborative mappers through the steps of working on maps together. I don't believe the SVN has even been used.
