do you must pay for vanilla

Vanilla has a good reputation of being a lightweight forum that will integrate into your website nicely. It's way underpowered compared to MyBB, the forum system Nexuiz Ninjaz runs on. I heard good things about Vanilla but when I tried it for myself and looked at the nitty gritty, I realized, I'd rather develop off a foundation built by real developers.
