FPS Beginner's Checklist

FPS Beginner's Checklist
I've been playing Nexuiz for about 4 months, but there are some things that I've just now figured out that I should have known from the start. This would be embarrassing except I'm also pretty new to playing games on my computer in general. I only played on a game console before. If you're new to first person shooters, here is some valuable information.

 1. Set your mouse acceleration to zero or off - You do this in your operating system control panel and/or your mouse driver preferences. Just did this last month. What a difference. Icon_smile
 2. Get a decent mouse - 800 dpi, 5 buttons and not cordless seems to be the consensus. I had a 400 dpi, 5 button corded mouse that wasn't bad, but with an 800 dpi you can spin faster with the same precision.
 3. Get stereo speakers or headphones - I just discovered that my speakers were reversed! :icon_redface: When your speakers are set up right you can tell which direction your getting shot from. Kinda important.
 4. Set your video quality low enough that you get at least 60 frames per second. Just play around with the options screen settings in Nexuiz. It may take a while to get it right. it depends on your video card mostly, but also depends on the driver and the operating system. If you want to play well, frame rate is more important than how good it looks.
 5. Practice against the bots if you are getting beaten too easily when you play online. Use the create screen in Nexuiz to select a map and choose the number and skill of bots to play against.
 6. Ask for help, if you are playing online and see someone using a technique you don't know.
 7. Watch the demos and videos in the Kyoman.
 8. Check http://nexuiztraining.com for class schedules.
So much to do, so little time to do it

RE: FPS Beginner's Checklist
Cool man. Good concise list. I agree with all things you've said. Especially the mouse, omg what a difference it makes. You don't even know until you try :D.

My old mouse used to send me spinning staring upwards at the ceiling if I turned too fast :(.

RE: FPS Beginner's Checklist
IMO 60fps is not enough, there's a lot you'll be missing in fast/close fights, you need AT LEAST 70. For me, 90 fps is where the real smoothness starts. But it's so complicated because of monitors refresh rates.

I read a lot of stuff about fps and the human eye and it seems to be different from person to person, but I think anybody could "feel" the difference between 60 and 90. Especially in a game like Nexuiz where there is a lot of fast movement with the mouse. The human eye does not have a "fixed" maximum fps it can see, so the more fps, the better. Be it 90, 120 or 300. I'm gonna try to find a very interesting article I read a while ago about that stuff.

RE: FPS Beginner's Checklist
Good point nifrek. I'd be interested in the article if you find it. My frame rate ranges from 50 to 150 depending on the map and number of players, but my monitor's refresh rate is just 60 Hz.

I feel pretty comfortable at around 100 fps. That's when my nex aim gets good. But I'm on Mac (Apple didn't support OpenGL 2.0 completely) and it often falls down to around 60 fps even on lowest quality settings. I find it is still possible to play well, but you have to favor explosive weapons since your aim can be off. It's kind of like adjusting to a high ping, which thankfully isn't a problem unless I try a European server.

RE: FPS Beginner's Checklist
Higher is better, you are getting more frames (pictures) per second :)

If you are using Un*x system, btw what else is there.
You can use the command "xset m 0/0 0" to turn off mouse acceleration.

I have a 20 inch mac and I have 90. But which macbook do you have. The 1.83 GHz macbook is very slow with 3D games.
